Sometimes the best writing lessons you can learn as both a freelance writer and a freelance blogger are the ones that you learn by accident. This was the case for a recent lesson I've learned, and one that even in a short time is paying off dividends. The writing lesson in this case is simple: don't be afraid to blog with emotion.
Granted, if you are always writing blog posts that ramble incoherently and jump from place to place or point to point then there are more important things than writing with emotion. That being said, as writers many of us are used to having to write point by point articles that can often be described as being very cookie cutter. While having some stability is a good thing - after all you want to be viewed as an expert, but once in a while if you become really passionate about something, don't be afraid to speak out.
Sometimes a blog can seem stale, and that bit of emotion can jump start everything. Maybe that's not even a problem. A change of pace is always a good thing, and if you're normal blogging voice is measured and calm, a little bit of fire to spice things up could not only gain the attention of your current readers, but also snag many new ones.
One of the most successful blog posts I've ever had is a very recent one where I "threw down the gauntlet." This has led to more subscribers, more Twitter followers, a huge jump in reads, and the most comments of any individual post by far (over double and still counting). All that from letting a little emotion in.
There is a difference between letting in a little fire, and being crude. But if you have a little bit of emotion and passion for a post, go ahead and put it up. You might be surprised at the results.
